What are we learning this half term?
Year 5/6 Autumn 1
In maths, Y5/6 We follow Power Maths, which will include these maths topics:
Place value within 100,000, Rounding, Roman Numerals, Place value within 1,000,000, Negative numbers, and Adding and subtracting .
Each week, we will complete timed multiplication grids two times a week, as well as additional sessions to focus on times table skills.
We will also be setting Times Tables Rock Stars homework sessions from Thursday's at 3.30pm.
We will be studying one book this term:
King Kong by Anthony Browne, which will include writing a Newspaper report and job adverts, we will also use role play and other aspects of drama alongside our learning.
We will focus on using our inference skills to deduce information from the text about characters whilst studying Year 5 grammar objectives:
- Fronted Adverbials
- Speech Marks
- Expanded Noun phrases
- Using conjunctions, prepositions and adverbs
Whole Class Reading
In our WCR lessons, we will learn and practice the skills of summarising, inferring, improving our word knowledge and understanding characters feelings and motives through reading some short texts and at times some longer texts.
This term in our Geography we will be focusing on the topic North America.
We will be looking at the following:
Identify countries of North America Investigate and compare climates in North America Explore geographical features of North America Explore capital cities of North America Explore the various times zones of North America and how these compare to other time zones Compare a region in the U.K with a region in North America Look at and take part in Mexican Culture – food, festivals etc.
Within Science we will be studying ‘Earth and Space’, where Children will have the opportunity to ask their own questions about what they observe, set up simple practical enquiries and tests, record findings as well as draw simple conclusions.
