Welcome to Miss Myers' Class!
Welcome back to another year! This is the first term back after the summer holidays. I hope you are all refreshed and have come back raring to go!
Maths: This term we are looking at place value. The Y3's will be focusing on place value of numbers up to 1000 while the Y4's will be looking at numbers up to 10,000. We are hoping to also fit in our Addition and Subtraction unit where children will be using the formal method of calculation to work out calculations that include up to 4 digit numbers.
By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know their times tables up to 12x12. To support us in our knowledge of times tables, we will be having a bi-weekly times table test. You can help yourselves by practicing your times tables at home on Times Table Rockstars or by writing them out yourself and asking your parent/carer to test you.
Writing: In Writing this term we will be focusing on Cracking Contraptions, a video involving Wallace and Gromit and making our inventions while also writing and looking at the features of an explanation text. We will also be covering the book Shackleton's Journey which gives us great detail about the journey of Shackleton and his men as they travel to Antarctica.
Grammar lessons will be held on a weekly basis (Monday) and we will looking at things such as paragraphs, headings and subheadings, conjunctions, expanded noun phrases, perfect present and simple past tense and fronted adverbials.
Reading: We will continue to develop our reading skills this year through the use of RIC (Retrieve, Interpret and Choice) as well as continue to develop our Inference skills. We will be focusing on two books: The Great Explorer and Journey.
Please make sure to send in a video of you reading at home through class dojo. If you are unsure of how to do this, please let me know and I will message you with instructions through the message app on dojo. Reading is an important part of learning and the more you continue to read, the more things you will learn. You can use the Oxford Owl website to find books to read online as well as take a book home from school to read.
Science: In science this term we will be focusing on Animals Including Humans. We will be specifically looking at digestion, teeth, nutrition and diet. The children will take part in some experiments throughout this topic, including looking at how teeth decay.
History/Geography: We are mainly focusing in Geography by looking at the Polar Regions. Children will cover a range of geographical skills including learning what longitude and latitude are, the different hemispheres, using map skills to plot routes and learning about the Weddell Sea. There will also be a historical aspect as we look at who Ernest Shackleton was the timeline of the journey of the Endurance.
P.E is on a Tuesday and Friday. Due to Covid, children need to come in their PE kit. Please make sure your child has the correct PE kit, plain white t-shirt and plain black or blue trousers. No logos. As we will be outside, please ensure children are dressed appropriately. Please can you also make sure that all jewellery is removed.
