Welcome to Miss O’Neill’s Year 3 Class Page
Autumn 1 Term
This term the children will be using the power maths scheme covering:
Unit 1- Place Value within 1000
We will be looking at two books this term:
Cinderella of the Nile- The children will read through the story developing their interrogation and inference skills to create a short news report, They will explore the authors use of literacy language and its effect on the readers. Once the story has been read, the children devise their own version of a Cinderella story complete with fable!
The Story of Tutankhamun- The children begin by exploring the history of Tutankhamun and writing reports about Ancient Egypt before going on to find out about Howard Carter and exploring the stories and legends about the curse of Tutankhamun’s tomb. We will finish by writing a biography of Tutankhamun.
To remain in keeping with the themes for this term the two main books being analysed within whole class guided reading are:
How does a lighthouse work – the children will use the text to make predictions, infer, retrieve and summarise whilst exploring further the subject of lighthouses and engineering.
Avoid being Tutankhamun- the children will share sections of the text and retrieve information to answer questions, create speech and develop deeper understanding of the lives of the Egyptians. The children will also work on their inference and choice skills to develop their understanding of the text, make predictions and develop vocabulary.
Our topic within science this term is light where the children will explore and develop their investigation skills. The children will recognise that they need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light, notice that light is reflected from surfaces, recognise that light from the sun can be dangerous and that there are ways to protect their eyes. They will recognise that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by a solid object and find patterns in the way that the size of shadows change.
This term the children will be looking at ancient Egypt, we will analyse artefacts and pictorial evidence to understand this early civilisation. The children will also use maps, atlases and globes to locate different geographical areas, place key events from the ancient Egyptian period on a timeline, find out who the pharaohs were and how they used hieroglyphics. We will learn about ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses and understand the importance of pyramids.
Within our R.E. Lessons we will discuss different themes about beliefs and faiths, this term our focus is Christianity and Hinduism. However within the classroom children will always be encouraged to share their ideas, understanding and morals from all faiths if they wish to. Areas we will be exploring are the different ideas about God, Christian beliefs about God, the story of Moses and the burning bush, Hindu beliefs about Gods, the Hindu story of creation and the similarities and differences between Hinduism and Christianity.
Things to note
On Monday and Wednesday the children will need to attend school wearing their PE kit which they will remain in all day.
We will be following schemes for Spelling, Music, PE, Computing and French. Art is integrated within the themes of the term. This term the children will be designing their own canopic jars and forming and sketching shadows.
