Welcome to Mrs Morris' Class!
What will we be learning this term?
Welcome back after our Easter holiday!
Summer Term 1
This term we will be focussing on numbers to 20 and then 50 and addition and subtraction within 20.
We will continue to follow the Power maths scheme, which we use throughout the school. The children will have lots of opportunities to develop their skills through practical activities and they will develop their written number skills.
We will be introducing the children to different models and images including the part/whole model.
In Literacy, we will continue to focus on developing phonic knowledge both in reading and writing.
We will be using a range of books to support our work, Iggy Peck Architect and Julian is a mermaid. We will continue to develop the use of phonics, spelling high frequency words and the use of punctuation.
New spellings will be set on Spelling Shed each week. Please encourage your child to play on Spelling Shed as it is an enjoyable way to learn spellings.
We will continue to set eBooks using Monster Phonics.
We appreciate that it is more difficult to read on screen but the children should, ideally, be reading every day.
Please can you video your child reading and upload it on the portfolio so that we can see how they are doing.
In Science we will be focussing on plants.
We will be finding out about types of plants, including trees, and we will begin to name the different parts.
We will be developing our observation, classifying and recording skills through a variety of tasks.
This term our work is based around creating art from natural materials e.g. twigs, leaves and pebbles. We will look at the work of famous artists and create work in their style.
We will be learning about how transport has changed and some significant individuals like George Stephenson and Amelia Earhart.
In computing we will be learning to log on and off of the laptops. We will also learn about the computer keyboard and begin to use word processing software.
We will be learning about sacred places for Christians and Muslims. As part of the work, we will be looking at churches and mosques and talking about what happens when people attend church or a mosque.
In PSHE we will be attending a virtual road safety talk about keeping safe in the car. We will complete the work on SRE (Sex and Relationship Education. This work is age appropriate for Year 1 and information about the content has been sent out previously by Miss Gudgin. We will also cover other aspects of the curriculum including how to be a good friend, being kind and helping others.
We will be making wheeled vehicles using wheels and axles. As part of the unit the children will be designing, making and evaluating their work.
If your child is in school.
Our P.E days are Monday and Wednesday.
Please remember that the children will be coming into school in their P.E. kits on these days.
Our PE policy states PE kit is the following: a white top, black or navy bottoms, outdoor shoes/plimsolls and a plain jumper/jacket (your child could wear their school jumper).
Please be mindful that we are trying to keep the PE kit as plain as possible.
Please also make sure that all jewellery, including earrings are removed on these days.
Please do not hesitate to contact me, via Dojo, if you have any questions or concerns.
