Pupil Premium

Back to Information
What is it?

The Pupil Premium is funding that is allocated to schools for the specific purpose of boosting the attainment of pupils who may suffer some form of disadvantage. Funding is based on children who have registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years, or have a parent who works in the armed forces or a child that has been in care for more than six months.

 Why has it been introduced?
The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is in additional to main school funding, is one way to address inequalities that exist in terms of attainment between different groups of pupils. The DFE believes that schools are best placed to decide how to spend the funding in order to make the most impact. Schools are however required to report how they have spent the money and what impact it has made.
