Hello From Year 3!
Take a look at what we are learning this term.
In our English this term we have chosen to look at Escape Pompeii and The Fatal Fire.
From these texts we will be identifying and creating:
- Descriptive Writing
- Story Writing
- Speech and dialogue
- Powerful language
We will be looking at poetry and different structures of writing in verse. The children will focus on rhymes, alliteration, calligrams, shape poems, diamante and acrostic poems. This will include looking at poem structures, listing, building adverbs into sentences, powerful language, synonyms and antonyms.
We will be continuing with our whole class reading which always includes a RIC starter and developing skill activity. We will continue to focus on retrieval, interpretation and choice skills to develop our reading and comprehension skills for different types of written information. Reading regularly is essential for your child to build the skills they are learning in school.
Each day we work on out times tables and build different skills depending on our lesson focus this terms topics are taken from the Power Maths Scheme:
The first topic is Multiplication and division
Writing statements for multiplications and division
Positive integer scaling problems
Mixed multiplication and addition/subtraction questions.
Next we will look at Measuring Money
Recognition of coins
Conversion of pence and pounds
Addition and subtraction of pence and pounds
Following this we will study Statistics
Recognition of bar charts, pictograms and tables
Interpreting and presenting chart data
More and fewer questions on frequency
And as a final topic we will understand Length
Recognizing units of measurements, conversion of units, come paring and ordering lengths and calculating perimeters.

History and Geography
This term we will be learning about the Romans/Roman Britain in our History and Geography lessons. We will look at what settlers and invaders are and how they played a key role in the Roman Empires expansion. We will also delve into the daily lives of the Romans and discover what weird and wonderful activities they undertook such as praying to their Gods. The Roman Army will be a big focus of ours and the children will discover what their legionaries and auxiliaries were required to do. Another focus will be Boudica and the Celts effect on Roman Britain.
Within Science we will be studying ‘Forces’, within this topic we will look at how different materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching. Another area we will be investigating is how things move on different surfaces and if objects can be categories into push and pull. Next we will be getting out our magnets and looking at the properties of materials and what attracts and repels a magnet, this will include understanding how magnets have different poles.
We will continue to have our regular PE slot on Friday afternoon and all children are required to bring their PE kit into school. WE also undertake a skipping activity each day so be sure to bring a coat in case its cold/wet weather.
