Welcome to Miss Knowles’ class - Year 5
Miss Knowles, Year 5, Spring 2 term
This term in year 5 we have started using the power math’s scheme. We will be covering multiplication and division, fractions and decimals and percentages. We will be looking at a wide range of reasoning and problem-solving questions and seeing how they fit in a real-life context.
We will be basing our learning on the text ‘Kaspar the Prince of Cats’ by Michael Morpurgo and looking at a range of writing styles, including diary entries, non-chronological reports, newspaper reports and descriptive writing. Spelling remains a big focus in year 5, homework will be set weekly on spelling shed and it is important that this practice is maintained throughout.
We will continue to use the reading with RIC starter that the children are really enjoying. This covers a range of media including written text, short films, songs and images and give the children a wide variety of content that they can use their comprehension skills in.
We will also continue to look at high quality texts in the main part of our lesson inferring, predicting, retrieving, performing and summarizing the information that we have explored.
In science year 5 will be looking at Earth and Space, we will be looking at a range of different things within that including shadows, orbiting and the Earth’s rotation. Within this we will include lots of scientific skills such as investigations, predicting, testing, measuring and recording. There will be plenty of hands on activities for the children to prove or disprove scientific statements!
In history we will be focusing on the Titanic which is a theme that runs through Kaspar the Prince of Cats. We will be looking at the reason why the Titanic was built, the class system at the time, other events that occurred, the survivors and its legacy. Within this we will be looking at role play and considering how the different people felt at that time.
Year 5 will be focusing on Judaism, in particular looking at why the Torah is important to Jewish people. We will be exploring these views and sharing our own beliefs maintain the high levels of respect and maturity year 5 have shown so far.
In art this term we will be looking at our skills of sketching and painting. Considering how to draw things in perspective and our use of colour to set the tone and mood for that image.
In computing this term, we will be creating a radio show, this will cover the Titanic disaster and looking at our skills of creating and editing content using audacity.
In French this term we will be looking at the topic of hobbies. Within this we will be focusing on our skills of speaking and writing as we have developed a wide range of vocabulary that we can use to structure our conversations.
