Year 5 Spring Term 1 2020
Our topic this term is based around the book The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan
How the curriculum will be covered
In English we will be basing our work on the text The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan. During the term the children will have the opportunity to write different types of text. These include; character setting, Non-chronological reports and narratives. We will also be developing our skills of editing and using the grammar features we have covered so far.
We will be continuing with our whole class reading and this term we will continue to focus on inference and developing comprehension skills using different types of written information.
We will also be continuing with our Reading with RIC whereby we focus on the skills of retrieval, inference and authors choice.
We will be continuing with our Word of the day and vocabulary focus. Each day the children will be introduce to a new word and how to use it within a sentence.
We will be focusing on multiplication and division, perimeter and area, fractions and decimals and percentages. We will continue to develop our reasoning and problem-solving skills. Homework will be set on Times Tables Rockstar’s on a weekly basis. If you have lost your log in details, please let me know.
In science we will be focusing on living things.
-Reproduction of plants
-insect and Amphibian life cycles
-Mammal and bird life cycles
Along side our scientific skills such as;
-asking and answering questions
-reporting and presenting
-identifying scientific evidence
In Art we will be looking at sketching and the skills that are involved. We will be looking at creating shade, tone and texture using different graded pencils.
In computing this term, we will be using Flowol software to create flow charts. We will be looking at algorithms and how we input information into computers.
This term we will be looking at Food and drink. The children will use the vocabulary they have learnt and begin to use if in a variety of sentences and questions. We will start our topic looking at the range of countries that speak French in the world and celebrating these countries.
Our topic work is based on the water cycle. We will be looking at the journey of water and some of the key vocabulary such as; evaporation, transpiration, condensation and precipitation. We will also be looking at these in real life contexts and how floodplains are used.
This term we will be looking at the topic ‘living long, living strong’ looking at healthy lifestyles and how to be an effective learner.
We will continue to look at pulse, rhythm and pitch. The children will get the opportunity to sing, play, improvise and compose a song.
In PE we will be developing our dance skills. We will be looking specifically at the Hakka and the culture behind this style of dance. The children will get the chance to create and perform their own. Year 5 will have PE on a Thursday afternoon and swimming on a Tuesday morning. Please make sure your child has their PE kit (plain white T-shirt, plain black shorts and pumps) and their swimming kit in school on these days. Please ensure that earrings and any other jewellery are removed beforehand.
Our RE topic this term is based on the question ‘What do Christians believe about Jesus?’. The children will get the opportunity to share their own opinions on these beliefs and we will also be promoting the need to be respectful of beliefs different to our own.
